Joseph C. CALEF

Joseph C. CALEF is my first cousin seven times; we are related through Dominicus and Hannah (TRISTRAM) JORDAN.  He resided Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts and Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[1]  He appears in many court records as few are: 1757 plaintiff in trespass case with James JORDAN; 1758 plaintiff in trespass case with Thomas WORMWOOD; 1758 plaintiff in trespass case with Zebadiah BANKS; 1759 defendant in ejectment case with Gilliam PHILLIPS; and many others occurring in courts outside of Suffolk County.[2]  As a gift he and Mehitable received 40 ½ acres of land from her father in 1758.[3]  He was recorded in the diary of Reverend Thomas M.  SMITH that he visited with Dr. COOPER, Mr. BOWERS, Dr. WINTHROP, John HANCOCK, Mr. BRATTLE, Mr. HUBBARD and Joseph CALEF.[4]  Assuming these are the people we read of from history books, I believe the John HANCOCK was the one who was active in the signing of the Constitution.  And assuming that is correct I believe that Joseph CALEF was at least partially involved in the events of the day.  Joseph’s will and probate were dated 1776, there is an attached copy of his will and probate letter.[5]  Due to the writing I was only partially able to transcribe the will, which is also attached below.  It was said he was an unsuccessful merchant in his day, but due to his real estate holdings his Ebenezer was able to amass a small fortune for Joseph’s heirs.[6]  Most of his sons were active in the Revolutionary War serving in various capacities from guarding coasts to being stationed on ships in the harbors surrounding Boston.[7]

Joseph C. CALEF was born 4 November 1724 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts[8].  He was christened 8 November 1724 at New South Church in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[9]  He is the son of Joseph C. and Hannah (JORDAN) CALEF.  He died 31 May 1776 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[10]  His body is interred at Milton Cemetery in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts[11].  Joseph married Mehitable C. MILLER 12 September 1758 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts[12].  Mehitable C. MILLER was born 27 April 1735 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts, christened 4 May 1735 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[13]  She is the daughter of Colonel Samuel and Rebecca (MINOT) MILLER.  She died 13 April 1790 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[14]  She is interred at Milton Cemetery in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[15]

Joseph and Mehitable had the following children:

  • Samuel CALEF born 12 December 1758 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[16] He died 22 October 1836 in either Kingston, Rockingham, New Hampshire or Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Maine.[17]  He was unmarried at his death.
  • Joseph CALEF born 12 December 1758 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[18]
  • Ebenezer Winter CALEF born 17 August 1760 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[19] He died 9 February 1829 in Walpole, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[20]  Ebenezer married Sarah Gardner GIBSON 1 or 21 February 1800 at Hollis Street Church by Reverend Samuel WEST in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[21]
  • Hannah CALEF born 1 March 1763 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts[22]. She died 22 February 1855 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.  Hannah married Major Samuel Niles THAYER 23 July 1793 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[23]
  • Mehitable Miller CALEF born 1 September 1765 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts[24]. She died of consumption 26 October 1844 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[25]  She married Colonel Thomas Balch LEGATE 19 February 1803, there were no children.
  • Stephen Miller CALEF born 9 September 1767 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[26] He married Rebecca EMMERSON 7 December 1807 in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Maine.[27]
  • Robert Jordan CALEF born 9 May 1770 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[28] He died 22 March 1776 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts[29].  He is interred at Milton Cemetery in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[30]
  • Rebecca Thayer CALEF was born 17 September 1772 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts[31]. She died of dropsy 4 October 1858 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[32]  She married Joseph Neals HOWE 28 July 1825 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, there were no children.[33]
  • John CALEF born 27 May 1776 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts[34]. He died 30 August 1777 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[35]  He is interred at Milton Cemetery in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[36]
