Ernest Clement BUTLER

Ernest is my second great granduncle, related through his parents Clement Benjamin and Elisa (COUTURE) BOUTEILLER.  He was enumerated with his parent in the 1861 Canadian census.[1]  In the 1870 and 1880 U.S. census he was enumerated with his parents[2].  He was enumerated with his wife Susanna in the 1900 and 1910 census[3].  His occupations varied from laborer at a saw mill and at a sugar mill (Michigan Sugar Co.), to a county clerk (Arenac), farmer and a supervisor of a township (Saginaw City).

Ernest Clement BUTLER was born 7 July 1857 in Keeseville, Clinton, NY.  He died 10  April 1938 in Zilwaukee, Saginaw, MI[4].  He is interred at Mt. Olivet, Zilwaukee, Saginaw, MI.[5]  He married three times, first to Susanna (Susie) BORDEAU 14 January 1883 in Standish, Arenac, MI.  She was born 4 February 1862 in Saint-Antoine-des-Laurentides, Quebec, Canada to parents Gilbert and Delma Adeline Rose (TRUDEAU) BORDEAU.  She died 31 August 1912 of complications during a hysterectomy in Zilwaukee, Saginaw, MI.[6]  She was interred at St. Patrick Cemetery in Bay City, Bay, MI.[7]  He married second to Louise CLUKEY 7 September 1913 in Bay City, Bay, MI.[8]  Louise was born 1887 in Bentley, MI.[9]  Her parents were Charles and Elizabeth (HOOD) CLUCKEY.   Ernest and Louise divorced 16 January 1915 in Bay City, Bay, MI.[10]  She died 1939 in Bay City, Bay, MI.  He married third to Elizabeth (Bessie) HOLLEY 20 September 1926 in Saginaw, Saginaw, MI.  She was born 11 September 1880 in Bay City, Bay, MI.[11]   She is the daughter of Archie and Fransine (LABRASH) HOLLEY.  She died 11 September 1947 in Saginaw,  Saginaw, MI.[12]  She is interred at St. Matthew Church Zilwaukee, Saginaw, MI.[13]

Ernest and Susanna had the following children:

  1. George Joseph was born 12 April 1884 in Zilwaukee, Saginaw, MI.[14]  He died 24 June 1927 in Wayne, MI.[15]  George married Elta DECKER 4 February 1904 in Cossopolis, Cass, MI by Rev. Albert Cartland.[16]  Elta was born about 1886 in Wakelee, Cass, MI.  She is the daughter of Reed and Ida (WHITE) DECKER.
  2. Mary was born about 1885 in Michigan. She died 15 April 1887 in East Saginaw, Saginaw, MI.[17]
  3. Berten was born about 1886 in Michigan. He died 22 Jun 1887 in Standish, Arenac, MI.[18]
  4. Elizabeth “Bessie” J. was born 15 March 1888 in Standish, Arenac, MI.[19] She died 17 November 1926 in Detroit, Wayne, MI.
  5. Mabel M. was born 13 March 1890 in Saginaw, Saginaw, MI.[20] She died 11 March 1907 Bay City, Bay, MI. She was interred at Saint Patrick Cemetery, Bay City, Bay, MI.[21]
  6. Stella was born 22 October 1891 in Standish, Arenac, Michigan.[22]
  7. Cora was born February 1894 in Michigan.
  8. Son born 4 May 1895 in Standish, Arenac, MI.[23]
  9. Harvey B. was born 15 August 1896 in Standish, Arenac, MI.[24] He died May 1980 in Poplar Bluff, Butler, MO.
  10. Pearl D. was born 15 August 1901 in Standish, Arenac, MI.[25] She died 9 September 1962.  She married Henri A. BRYSSELBOUT 4 September 1920 in Detroit, Wayne, MI.[26]  Henri was born about 1900 in Michigan.  He is the son of Emile E. and Claire (VALLEY) BRYSSELBOUT.
  11. Clarence Jack was born 3 February 1904 in Saginaw, Saginaw, MI. He died 6 January 1984 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.

Obituary[27]

Ernest C. Butler, 78, former clerk of Arenac Co. died Sunday at his home in Zilwaukee.  Born July 7, 1857 in Clinton Co. N.Y. he came to Michigan in 1879.  He married Susan Bordeau Jan 14, 1883, in Michigan and settled in Standish Township, Arenac Co.  He served 8 successive years as supervisor of Standish Township, Arenac Co. and two terms as county clerk.  He was field man for the Michigan Sugar Company for 23 years.    Mrs. Butler died in 1912.  Mr. Butler moved to Zilwaukee in 1926 and married Mrs. Elizabeth Jolin there Sept 20, 1926.  He leaves his wife, three daughters, Miss Cora Butler and Mrs. E. J. Miller of Detroit and Mrs. H.A. Brysselbout of York, PA; two sons, Harvey and Clarence Butler of Detroit; one sister, Mrs. Louis Dumond of San Pedro, CA; one brother, George Butler of Bay City; 7 grandchildren, and eight step-grandchildren.  Funeral services will take place at 8:30 pm Tuesday at the residence on Carrollton Road, Zilwaukee, and at 9 am at St. Mathew’s Church.  Rev. Fr. Eugene McCarthy will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Olivet.
