James LINDSEY

James is my fourth great grandfather. James was enumerated with his wife and children in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census taken in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[1]  He was listed as a fisherman in all the censuses.

James LINDSAY was born in between 1804 and 1806 on Fox Island, North Haven, Knox, Maine.  He is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Birch Harbor, Hancock, Maine or Birch Hill Cemetery in Winter Harbor, Hancock, Maine.[2]  James married Sarah GROVER in 1827 in Islesboro, Waldo, Maine.[3]

Sarah was born in between 1803 and 1805 in Isle au Haut, Knox Maine.  She died 26 February 1878 in Birch Harbor, Hancock, Maine or 26 December in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[4]

James and Sarah had the following children:

  1. William G. LINDSAY was born 1827. He died May 1850 in Hancock County, Maine.[5]  He is interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Winter Harbor, Hancock, Maine.[6]   William married Elmira LINDSEY 31 January 1850 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[7]
  2. Lucy S. LINDSAY was born 22 June 1828 in Islesboro, Waldo, Maine.[8] She died 24 August 1909 in Winter Harbor, Hancock, Maine.  Lucy married Jonas RICE 13 August 1846 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[9]
  3. Andrew C. LINDSAY was born 27 October 1830 in Isle au Haut, Knox, Maine. He died of paralysis on 3 December 1899 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[10]  He is interred in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[11]  Andrew married twice; first to Lydia Ann RICE 22 January 1852.[12]  He married second to Ariandna RICE 28 September 1865 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[13]
  4. Captain James LINDSAY was born 1835. He died 7 March 1912.  He is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Birch Harbor, Hancock, Maine.[14]  James married twice.  He married first to Andrea.  He married second to Hannah PETTEE, he divorced Hannah October 1870.[15]
  5. Susan LINDSAY was born in 1836 in Maine. She married Jacob MILLER before 1856.
  6. Drusilla LINDSAY was born 20 February 1836 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[16] She married twice; first to Capt. George W. WESCOTT on 2 January 1853 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[17]  Divorcing him in October 1873.[18]  She married second to Chelsea WESCOTT on 7 November 1873 in Otis, Hancock, Maine.[19]  Drusilla and George are my third great grandparents.
  7. Emeline LINDSAY was born 1842 in Maine. She is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Birch Harbor, Hancock, Maine.[20]  She married Gilbert B. JONES 12 July 1857 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[21]
  8. Rosetta was born 1846. Rosetta married Samuel H. BROWN 8 November 1863 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[22]

Captain George W. WESCOTT

George is my third great grandfather; sixth cousin six times removed and seventh cousin four times removed through Joseph and Abigail (Paul) ALCOCK; he is my seventh cousin three times removed through John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK.  George was a fisherman, mariner, farmer, master mariner, and merchant.[1]  He was enumerated in the 1860 and 1870 censuses while married to Drusilla.[2]  He was enumerated in the 1880, and 1900 censuses while married to Charlotte.[3]  George served in the Union Army in the Civil War as a sergeant in Company I, Maine 28th Infantry.[4]  His unit went from Maine to New York (Fort Schuyler), then to Fortress Monroe in Virginia.  They then were in Chalmette and Donaldsonville, Louisiana.  His unit then attached to another unite while in Louisiana.  His unit was engaged in the Assault on Port Hudson on 14 June 1863.  They went to Baton Rouge and then to Cairo, Illinois where he mustered out.[5]  He was 5 foot 11 inches tall, black hair, hazel eyes and had a dark complexion.[6]  He lived in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine his most of his life.

George W. WESCOTT was born 20 March 1830 in Blue Hill, Hancock, Maine.  He was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Mercy Haney (GRAY) WESCOTT.  He died 20 May 1908 from senile debility in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[7]  He is interred at Birch Harbor Village Cemetery in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.  George married twice.  He married first to Drusilla LINDSAY on 2 January 1853 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[8]  They divorced October 1873 in Hancock County, Maine.[9]  Drusilla was born 20 February 1836 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[10]  She was the daughter of James and Sarah (GROVER) LINDSAY.  She married second to George’s brother, Chelsea WESCOTT.[11]  George married second to Charlotte August (HANCOCK) JOY 26 December 1873.[12]  Charlotte was born 25 February 1845.  She died 12 July 1913.

George and Drusilla had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth “Eliza” WESCOTT born about 1854 in Maine.  She married Abraham Putnam “Put” CARR 18 November 1871 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.  She divorced him January 1880 in Penobscot County, Maine.[13]  He is my second cousin four times removed.  Elizabeth and Abraham were sixth cousins 2 times removed through John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK.
  2. Frances “Fannie” Alma WESCOTT born 2 May 1857 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine. She died 30 March 1935 in Oso, Snohomish, Washington.[14]  She is interred at Camano Lutheran Cemetery in Camano, Island, Washington.[15]  Frances married Aldis E. HOPKINS 3 September 1876 in Otis, Hancock, Maine.[16]
  3. Georgianna WESCOTT was born about 1859 in Maine.
  4. James W. WESCOTT was born 20 Jun 1860 in Maine. He died of labor pneumonia on 17 March 1910 in Winter Harbor, Hancock, Maine.[17]  He is interred at Winter Harbor, Hancock, Maine.  He married Anna H. TRACY 25 November 1886 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.
  5. Allura WESCOTT was born about 1862 in Maine. She married Captain William E. HUTCHINS 14 Jun 1879 in Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine.[18]

George adopted the following child:

  1. Lilla C. JOY born April 1870 in Maine. Her father was Zenas JOY, she was adopted by George Wescott upon marriage to Charlotte.  Lilla married William F. DAVIS 26 October 1892 in West Gouldsboro, Hancock, Maine by Justice of the Peace Arthur B. Kingsley[19].  Banns were published 15 October 1892 in West Gouldsboro.[20]
