Abigail GOODRIDGE

Abigail is my second cousin eight times removed; we are related through John and Lia (BLOTT) GREENE.  The name GOODRICH and GOODRIDGE are used interchangeably in records, I’m going to stick to GOODRIDGE for the purpose of this narrative since it is the name that became common use in the mid 1800’s.  This family has very few records to be found at this time.  I will update this in the future as records become available online.

Abigail GOODRIDGE was born 6 September 1715 in Berwick, York, Maine. [1] She was baptized 29 June 1718 at the First Church of Berwick, in Berwick, York, Maine.[2]  She was the daughter of Josiah and Mary (ABBOT) GOODRICH.  Abigail died 1 November 1806 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts.[3]  Abigail married twice, first to Nathaniel BURBANK 18 October 1742 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.[4]  Nathaniel was born 14 December 1715 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts.[5]  He was the son of Eleazer and Lydia (GAGE) BURBANK.  He died 1758 in Massachusetts.  She married second to Captain Jacob MORRILL 9 April 1771.[6]  Jacob died 23 March 1788.[7]

Abigail and Nathaniel had the following children:

  1. Sarah BURBANK was born 14 May 1743 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts.[8]
  2. Josiah BURBANK was born 14 June 1745 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts.[9] He was baptized 16 June 1745 in Byfield, Essex, Massachusetts by Rev. Moses PARSONS.[10]
  3. Mary BURBANK was born 15 March 1747. She was baptized 15 March 1747 in Byfield, Essex, Massachusetts by Rev. Moses PARSONS.[11]  She died of quinsy or throat distemper 12 June 1748.[12]
  4. Abigail BURBANK was born 19 October 1748 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.[13] She was baptized 30 October 1749 in Byfield, Essex, Massachusetts by Rev. Moses PARSONS.[14]  Abigail married William MOODY.[15]
  5. Mary BURBANK was born 23 November 1750 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.[16]
  6. John BURBANK was born 13 November 1755 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.[17] He died 23 December 1831 in Freeman, Franklin, Maine. He is interred at Tuttle Corner Cemetery in Freeman, Franklin, Maine.[18]   John married Mary JOHNSON 22 April 1777 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.  While still married to Mary, John married Dorcas WELCH 23 July 1787 in North Yarmouth, Cumberland, Maine.

Clement JORDAN

Clement is my first cousin seven times removed through his grandparents, Dominicus and Hannah (TRISTRAM) JORDAN, my seventh great grandparents.  “By the will of his father, Clement became the owner of Richmond’s Island, where he made his residence and where a number of his children were born. He then removed to his farm on the mainland, just opposite to Richmond’s Island, and here his first wife Elizabeth died. Tradition says of Clement Jordan that he was always looked up to by his neighbors for advice, as a counselor in public trouble, and as a healer of disease. He was nearly always chosen on the committee of safety in the troublesome times with the Indians, and with the mother country previous to the Revolution. As a doctor, he had a widespread practice, treating diseases principally with herbs and roots collected by himself from the earth. His daughter Elizabeth has been heard to say that she with the rest of the children had spent days and weeks collecting them for him. His salves and ointments were made by himself or by his directions, and his patients came from far and near, even from Boston, to have their fever-sores, ulcers and other bad sores cured. As there was no way of traveling in those days, except on horseback or on foot, there were more or less persons stopping at the house the year round for advice and treatment. He was very zealous about attending meeting. His large families of children were always required to go, and having no conveyance, had to go afoot, the distance to church being five miles.”[1]
