Clement RACKLIFF

Clement RACKLIFF is my third cousin five times removed; we are related through Dominicus “Indian Killer” and Hannah “Ruhanah” (TRISTRAM) JORDAN.  Clement and his family were members of the Religious Society of Friends also known as Quakers.[1]  Clement was instrumental in the purchase and building of the Unity, Maine meeting house with help of Benjamin R. STEVENS.[2] Clement’s residence was referred to as “Quaker Hotel”, according to his grandson James Rackliff TABER.[3]  He and his wife Hephzibah would make a yearly trip by horseback to Providence, Rhode Island (approximately 255 miles) for the annual meeting of the Friends.[4]  He was enumerated in 1850 living with daughter Hannah and her husband in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[5]  He and his family were among the first settlers in what is now known as Unity, Waldo, Maine.

Clement RACKLIFF was born 8 April 1774 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine.[6]  He was the son of Benjamin and Sarah (JORDAN) RACKLIFF.  He died 16 March 1858 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.  His body is interred at Quaker Hill Cemetery.[7]  Clement married twice; first he married Hephzibah CHASE 4 March 1803 in Waldo county, Maine.[8]  Hephzibah was born 12 June 1781 in Durham, Androscoggin, Maine.[9]  She was the daughter of Stephen and Hannah (BLETHEN) CHASE.  She died November 1838 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.  Her body is interred at Quaker Hill Cemetery in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[10]  Clement married second to Margaret BUFFUM 19 May 1841 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine.[11]  She was born 1778 in Scarborough.  She was the daughter of John and Hannah BUFFUM.  She died 15 May 1848.  Her body is interred at Quaker Hill Cemetery in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[12]  Clement was her third husband; she was married first to Remington HOBBY (1774-1805) and second to Tobias VARNEY (1777- ).[13]

Clement and Hannah had the following children:

  1. Lemuel Bartlett RACKLIFF born 2 February 1804 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[14] He died 1 June 1870 in Lacon, Marshall, Illinois.  He married Eunice SMALL 26 July 1832 in Freedom, Waldo, Maine by Mr. Jeremiah CURTIS.[15]  Eunice was born 19 March 1812 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.  She was the daughter of Daniel and Susannah (JACKSON) SMALL.  She died 3 October 1890 in Rutland, LaSalle, Illinois.
  2. Mahala RACKLIFF born 4 December 1805 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[16] She died 9 January 1838 in Vassalboro, Kennebec, Maine.  She is interred at Quaker Hill Cemetery in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[17]  Mahala married Asa JONES 27 April 1825 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[18]  Asa was born 21 July 1796 in Brunswick, Cumberland, Maine.  He was the son of Edward and Mary (TUTTLE) JONES.  He died 20 June 1856 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.  He was interred at Quaker Hill Cemetery in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[19]  His obituary was published in The American Annual Monitor.[20]
  3. Sarah Pope RACKLIFF was born 8 January 1808 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[21] She married Jacob TABER 27 February 1839 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[22]  Jacob was born 6 October 1807 in Vassalboro, Kennebec, Maine.[23]  He was the son of Barnabas and Lydia (HUSSEY) TABER.  He died 30 June 1879 in Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.  He was interred at Maplewood Cemetery in Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[24]  He is the brother to William TABER husband of Sarah’s sister Hannah.  Jacob married twice after Sarah’s death; Eliza FLETCHER (1827-1906) and to Mary STARKEY.
  4. Hannah RACKLIFF born 5 May 1810 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[25] She died 9 March 1889 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[26]  She was interred at Quaker Hill Cemetery in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[27]  Hannah married William TABER 22 March 1837 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[28]  William was born 19 February 1805 in Vassalboro, Kennebec, Maine.[29]  He was the son of Barnabas and Lydia (HUSSEY) TABER.  He died 25 May 1876 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[30]  His body was interred at Quaker Hill Cemetery in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[31]  He was the brother of Jacob TABER married to Hannah’s sister Sarah.  He married first to Mary Chase BUFFUM (1806-1834).[32]
  5. Hezekiah Chase RACKLIFF born 21 November 1812 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[33] He died 1 January 1897 in Maine.  He was interred at Pine Grove Cemetery in Bangor, Penobscot, Maine.[34]  Hezekiah married Rosanna A. “Rose” ROGERS 20 September 1839 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[35]  Rosanna was born about 1820 in Vermont.  She died 16 September 1891 in Bangor, Penobscot, Maine.  She was interred at Pine Grove Cemetery in Bangor, Penobscot, Maine.[36]
  6. James Halleck RACKLIFF born 26 February 1815 in Unity, Waldo, Maine.[37] There is no mention of him after his birth, so it’s possible that he died young.
