Rebecca RYTHER

Rebecca is my fourth cousin seven times removed; we are related through Robert Thomas and Susannah (SELBEE) BLOTT.  Her surname is also listed as RIDER, RYDER AND RITHER.  She was born and died in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts, though during her second marriage lived in various cities of Vermont.  She married twice; her first husband Samuel CONNABLE/CUNNABLE/CONABLE fought in the Revolutionary War[1].  He was also a very well-respected man that served many offices in the town of Bernardston.[2]  He was a surveyor of highways, surveyor of boards and shingles, constable and collector, warden, town treasurer and assessor.   Her second husband was a judge in Vermont.

Rebecca RYTHER was born 23 May 1753 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[3]  She was the daughter of Lieutenant David and Martha (SHATTUCK) RYTHER.  She died 20 April 1837 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[4].  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[5]  She married first to Samuel CONNABLE 13 November 1770 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[6]  Samuel was born 11 November 1743 in Fall Town, now known as Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[7].  He was the son of Samuel and Mary (ENGLISH) CONNABLE.  He died 29 April 1794 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[8]  He is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[9]  She married second to Honorable John BRIDGEMAN as his second wife on 24 February 1799 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[10]. He was born 10 September 1734 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[11]   He was the son of Orland and Martha (BELDING) BRIDGEMAN.  He died 26 February 1805 in Vernon, Windham, Vermont.[12]  He is interred at North Vernon Cemetery in North Vernon, Windham, Vermont.[13]

Rebecca and Samuel had the following children:

  1. Anna CONNABLE born 30 July 1772 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[14] She died 16 June 1853 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois.[15]  She is interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois[16].  Anna married Nehemiah WRIGHT 15 May 1794 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[17].  Nehemiah was born 25 January 1767 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[18]  He was the son of Reverend Job and Meriam (WRIGHT) WRIGHT.  He died 15 September 1840 in Derby, Orleans, Vermont.[19]  They had five children.
  2. Eunice CONNABLE was born 27 January 1774 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[20] She died 30 November 1797 in Guilford, Windham, Vermont. [21] She is interred at Blanchard Cemetery in Guilford, Windham, Vermont.[22]  She married Doctor Simon STEVENS as his second wife 19 November 1793 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[23]  He was born 2 November 1756 in Petersham, Worcester, Massachusetts.[24]  He was the son of Joseph and Doritha (SAWYER) STEVENS.  He died 15 August 1824 in Guilford, Windham, Vermont.[25]  He is interred at Blanchard Cemetery in Guilford, Windham, Vermont.[26]  They had two children.
  3. Captain Jonathan CONNABLE was born 14 August 1775 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[27] He died 5 January 1841 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[28].  He is interred at Center Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[29].  He married Asenath WRIGHT 20 October 1801 in Easthampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[30]  Asenath was born 22 August 1783 in Easthampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.[31]  She was the daughter of Elijah and Mary (STONG) WRIGHT.  She died 13 December 1839 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[32].  She is interred at Center Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[33]  They had eight children.
  4. Ezra CONNABLE was born 12 November 1779 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[34] He died 31 March 1840 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[35]  He is interred at Center Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[36].  He married three times, first to Abigail “Nabby” STEVENS 21 October 1808 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts[37].  Abigail was born 11 July 1784 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts[38].  She was the daughter of Wilder and Elisabeth (MAYO) STEPHENS.  She died 22 October 1812 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[39]  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[40]  They had two children.  He married second to Mary “Polly” DENISON 16 April 1814 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[41]  Mary was born 30 January 1782 in Leyden, Franklin, Massachusetts.[42]  She was the daughter of David and Mary “Polly” (BABCOCK) DENISON.  She died 7 November 1836 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[43]  She is interred at Center Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[44]  They had five children.  He married third to Sylvia P. PIERCE as her first husband 3 September 1838 in Brattleboro, Windham, Vermont.[45]  She was born in 1780 in Swanzey, Cheshire, New Hampshire.  She was the daughter of John and Mary PIERCE.  She died of consumption 27 September 1855 in Ashfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.[46]  She is interred at Center Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[47].
  5. Amelia CONNABLE was born 29 December 1781 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[48] She died 15 August 1831 in Gill, Franklin, Massachusetts[49].  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[50].  Amelia married Ebenezer Sereno FIELD 7 December 1800 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[51]  Ebenezer was christened 7 May 1775 in Gill, Franklin, Massachusetts.[52]  He was the son of Ebenezer and Eunice (WRIGHT) FIELD.  He died 30 May 1820 in Claremont, Sullivan, New Hampshire. [53] They had two children.
  6. Caroline/Carolina CONNABLE was born 24 June 1784 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[54]. She died 28 May 1867 in Franklin, Franklin, Vermont[55].  She married William FELTON 29 November 1806 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[56]  William was born 12 June 1779 in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts[57].  He was the son of William and Eunice (WILLIAMS) FELTON.  He died 24 September 1852 in Franklin, Franklin, Vermont.[58]  They had seven children.
  7. Rebecca CONNABLE was born 22 July 1787 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts[59]. She died after eating choke cherries 17 August 1800 in Vernon, Windham, Vermont.[60]  She is interred at North Vernon Cemetery in North Vernon, Windham, Vermont.[61]

Captain Eleazer FAIRBANKE/FAIRBANKS

Captain Eleazer FAIRBANKS is my second cousin nine times removed; we are related through Robert Thomas and Susannah (SELBEE) BLOTT.  He was a captain in the Massachusetts Militia.[1]  His probate was dated both 1742 and 1743.[2]

Captain Eleazer FAIRBANKS was born 29 December 1690 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[3]  He was the son of Captain Eleazer and Martha (LOVETT) FAIRBANKS.  He died 19 September 1741 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[4]  He is interred at Sherborn Center Cemetery in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[5]  He married Martha BULLARD 25 December 1712 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[6]  Martha was born 11 February 1695 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[7]  She was the daughter of Samuel and Deborah (ATHERTON) BULLARD.  She died 22 January 1756 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[8]  She was interred at Sherborn Center Cemetery, Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[9]   She married second to John PHIPS 22 December 1743 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[10]

Eleazer and Martha had the following children (the below information is not a complete biographical picture of each of the children):

  • Reverend Eleazer FAIRBANKS born 23 July 1716 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[11] He died 12 February 1760 in Monson, Hampden, Massachusetts.[12]  He married Prudence CARY in 1739 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[13]  She was born 1722 in Plainfield, Sullivan, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of John and Prudence (HAYWARD) CRARY.   She died 1761.
  • Joseph FAIRBANKS born 17 September 1718 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[14] He died 10 July 1790 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  He was part of the House of Assembly in Nova Scotia.[15]    He married Lydia BLAGDEN.[16]  Lydia was the daughter of Samuel and Ann (BLACKDEN) BLAGDEN.  He married second to Polly BROOKS 1743 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  Polly was born in 1722.
  • Deborah FAIRBANKS born 12 November 1719 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[17] She died 12 September 1775.  Deborah was interred at Sherborn Center Cemetery in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[18]  She married Captain Joseph TWITCHELL 28 June 1739 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[19]  Joseph was born in 1718.  He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (HOLBROOK) TWITCHELL.  He died 12 March 1792 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  He is interred at Sherborn Center Cemetery in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[20]
  • Moses FAIRBANKS born 14 August 1721 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[21] He died 2 September 1721 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[22]  He is mistakenly stated as being in the military 2 April 1759-29 September 1760.[23]
  • Sarah FAIRBANKS born 26 September 1722 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[24] She died 6 October 1723 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
  • Martha FAIRBANKS born 2 August 1724 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[25] She died 9 February 1815 in Sullivan, Cheshire, New Hampshire.[26]  She is interred at Dublin Town Cemetery in Dublin, Cheshire, New Hampshire.[27]  Martha married Benjamin MASON 28 September 1741 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[28]  Benjamin was born 14 July 1717 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[29]  He was the son of Benjamin and Mary (MONCK) MASON.  He died 5 July 1801 in Dublin, Cheshire, New Hampshire.[30]  He is interred at Dublin Town Cemetery in Dublin, Cheshire, New Hampshire.[31]
  • Abel FAIRBANKS born 28 November 1726 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[32] He died 17 March 1730 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[33]
  • Abigail FAIRBANKS was born 18 August 1829 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[34] She died 13 December 1728 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[35]
  • David FAIRBANKS was born 2 February 1730 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[36] He died 22 March 1730 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[37]  He is mistakenly listed as being born 2 February 1731.[38]
  • Abigail FAIRBANKS born 5 May 1732 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[39] She was christened 7 May 1732 in Natick, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  She died unmarried on 20 October 1751 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  She is interred at Sherborn Center Cemetery in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[40]
  • Ebenezer FAIRBANKS was born 1 June 1734 Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts[41]. He died 6 January 1812 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  Ebenezer married twice; first to Mary DEATH 1758 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  She was born 1738.  She died 1761.   He married second to Elizabeth DEATH.  Elizabeth was born in 1743.  She died in 1818.
  • Mary FAIRBANKS born in either 1736 or 19 December 1738 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[42] He died in 1762 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  She married Captain Samuel SANGER in 6 January 1757 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, they had no children.[43]

John DEATH

John DEATH is my third cousin eight times removed; we are related through Robert Thomas and Susannah (SELBEE) BLOTT.  He lived in Middlesex County, Massachusetts his entire life.  He died young at the age of 40.  His probate was dated 1742 in Middlesex County, Massachusetts[1].

John DEATH was born 30 May 1702 in Framingham, Middlesex, Massachusetts[2].  He was the son of Oliver and Martha (FAIRBANKS) DEATH.  John died 27 July 1742 in Holliston, Middlesex, Massachusetts[3].  He married Hannah MORSE 15 May 1729 in Holliston, Middlesex, Massachusetts[4].  Hannah was born 5 November 1712 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts[5].  She was the daughter of Aaron and Bethiah (PERRY) MORSE.  She died in 1780 in Hopkinton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

John and Hannah had the following children:

  • Jotham DEATH born 13 May 1730 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts[6]. He died 24 December 1804 in Wendell, Franklin, Massachusetts.  Jotham married Mercy PRATT 5 March 1750 in Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts[7].  Mercy was born 31 August 1733 in Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts[8].  She was the daughter of Amos and Anna (ALLEN) PRATT.  She died 9 November 1818 in Wendell, Franklin, Massachusetts[9].
  • John DEATH born 3 April 1732 in Holliston, Middlesex, Massachusett[10] He died 31 May 1775 in Memo, Tingri, Xizang (Tibet) China.  John married Jerusha CODY 2 August 1753 in Hopkinton, Middlesex, Massachusetts[11].  Jerusha was born 2 August 1732 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, she was christened 27 October 1734[12].  She was the daughter of Joseph LeCaudy and Mary (MARTIN) CODY.
  • Martha DEATH born 27 May 1738 in Framingham, Middlesex, Massachusetts[13]. She died February 1760 in Westborough, Worcester, Massachusetts.  Martha married Joseph BAKER[14].  Joseph was born 19 May 1736 in Westborough, Worcester, Massachusetts.  Joseph was the son of Edward and Persis (BRIGHAM) BAKER.  He died 9 November 1811.

Hannah RYTHER/RIDER/RYDER

Hannah is my fourth cousin seven times removed; we are related through Robert Thomas and Susannah (SELBEE) BLOTT.  She is the daughter of Lieut. David and Martha (SHATTUCK) RYTHER.

Hannah RYTHER was born 10 May 1746.[1]  She died 6 August 1815.[2]  She is interred at the Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[3]  Hannah married Ichabod WARNER 7 January 1766 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[4]  Ichabod was born in 1733 possibly in Glastonbury, Hartford, Connecticut.[5]  He was the son of Ichabod and Mary Goldsmith (MAPES) WARNER.  He died July 1814 in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[6]  He is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, Massachusetts.[7]

Hannah and Ichabod had the following children:

  1. Elihu WARNER born 18 January 1768.[8]  He died 15 March 1800.[9]
  2. Levi WARNER born 17 September 1769.[10]
  3. Pliney WARNER born 23 November 1771.[11] Pliney married Jerusha JONES.[12]
  4. Joel WARNER born 19 Jun 1773.[13] He died 1874.  Joel married three times.  First to Thankful CHAPIN.[14]  He married second to Gratia CHAPIN.[15]  His third marriage was to Rebecca.[16]
  5. Roswell WARNER born 8 February 1776.[17] He died 1850.
  6. Parthenia WARNER born 8 April 1779.[18] She died 27 December 1796.
  7. Seth V. WARNER born 4 Jun 1782.[19] He died 1843.  Seth married Lucinda JONES.[20]
  8. Lucinda (Luncindy) WARNER born 11 July 1785.[21] She died unmarried 20 September 1837.[22]

Lieutenant David RYTHER

David is my third cousin eight times removed.  We are related through Robert Thomas and Susannah (SELBEE) BLOTT.   David went by RIDER, RYDER and RYTHER throughout his life.[1]  David was a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War.   He was on a scouting mission to Fort Bridgman in Vermont and a scouting mission looking for westward expansion.[2]  He served under Israel Williams and Captain Phineas Stephens.  He held offices in the town of Bernardston, Franklin, MA, such as; selectman, Inspection and Safety, and Committee of Correspondence.[3]  His was one of the first families to settle in Bernardston, Franklin, MA, he purchased his lot for £48 ½ buying lot number 37.[4]  David and his family lived in Northfield, Franklin, MA about 1745 to 1747.[5]  David and family moved to Hadley, Hampshire, MA and lived there from 1747 to 1750.[6]  From 1750 till his death he and his family lived in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[7]

Lieutenant David RYTHER was born 15 August 1719 in Sherborn, Middlesex, MA.[8]  He was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (ADAMS) RYDER.  David died 6 June 1804 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[9]  He is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[10]  David married Martha SHATTUCK about 1745 in Northfield, Franklin, MA.[11]  Martha was born 2 April 1725 in Northfield, Franklin, MA.[12]  She was the daughter of Daniel and Rebecca (BOLTWOOD) SHATTUCK.  She died 12 November 1802 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[13]  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[14]

David and Martha had the following children:

  1. Hannah RYTHER born 10 May 1746 in Northfield, Franklin, MA.[15] She died 6 August 1815 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[16]  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[17]  Hannah married Ichabod WARNER 7 January 1766 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[18]  Ichabod was born 1 March 1838.[19]  He was the son of Ichabod and Mary Goldsmith (MAPES) WARNER.  He died 16 November 1815 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[20]  He is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[21]
  2. David RYTHER was born 10 September 1747.[22] He died 20 September 1747.[23]
  3. Peter RYTHER was born 23 November 1749 in Hadley, Hampshire, MA.[24] He drowned 24 May 1771 in Turner Falls, Franklin, MA.[25]
  4. Hophni RYTHER was born 2 April 1751 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[26] He died 13 Jun 1776 in probably Trois-Riviers, Quebec, Canada while serving in the Revolutionary War.[27]  Hophni married Sarah CONNABLE 6 May 1773.[28]  Sarah was born in May 1751 in Sunderland, Windsor, VT.[29]  She was the daughter of Samuel and Mary (English) CONNABLE.  She died in 1804.[30]
  5. Rebecca RYTHER was born 23 May 1753 in Bernardston, Franklin MA.[31] She died 20 April 1837 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[32]  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[33]  Rebecca married twice; first to Samuel CONNABLE 13 November 1770.[34]  Samuel was born 11 November 1743 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[35]  He was the son of Samuel and Mary (ENGLISH) CONNABLE.  He died 29 April 1794 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[36]  She married second to Judge John BRIDGMAN about 2 February 1799.[37]
  6. Martha RYTHER was born 10 April 1755 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[38] She died 19 March 1831.[39]  She is interred at Beaver Meadow Cemetery in Leyden, Franklin, MA.[40]  Martha married Deacon John HUNT.  John was born 15 March 1752 in Norwich, New London, CT.  He was the son of Thomas and Mary (SMITH) HUNT.  He died 14 July 1819 in MA.[41]  He is interred at Beaver Meadow Cemetery in Leyden, Franklin, MA.[42]
  7. David RYTHER was born 15 March 1758 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[43] He died 11 June 1831.[44]  He is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[45]  David married twice; first to Zurviah SMALLEY 3 January 1782 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[46]  Zurviah was born in 1765 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[47]  She was the daughter of William and Hannah (LOOMIS) SMALLEY.  She died 4 March 1813 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[48]  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[49]  He married second to Abigail WRIGHT 9 June 1814.[50]  She died 4 March 1827.[51]
  8. John RYTHER was born 14 February 1760 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[52] He died 30 September 1767.[53]
  9. Anna RYTHER was born 24 August 1763 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[54] She died 30 October 1765.[55]
  10. Elihu RYTHER was born 9 November 1765 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[56] He died 30 September 1767.[57]
  11. Gideon RYTHER was born 28 November 1768 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[58] He died 13 September 1839 in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[59] He is interred at Center Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[60]  Gideon married Sylvia ALEXANDER 10 October 1791.[61]  Sylvia was born 16 November 1764 in Northfield, Franklin, MA.[62]  She was the daughter of Thomas ALEXANDER.  She died 25 May 1850 in Brattleboro, Windham, VT.[63]  She is interred at Center Cemetery in Bernardston, Franklin, MA.[64]

Dr. Robert Ellis

Dr. Robert ELLIS is my first cousin ten times removed; we are related through his grandparents, my tenth great grandparents Robert Thomas and Susannah (SELBEE) BLOTT.  Robert is the youngest of seven children born to Dr. Edward and Sarah (BLOTT) ELLIS; he was born 24 September 1671 in Boston, Massachusetts.[1]  Robert married Elizabeth PEMBERTON 4 Jun 1698, officiated by Mr. James Allen.[2]  Robert and Elizabeth had six children:  Thomas, Robert, Samuel, Dr. Edward, Sarah and Elizabeth.  Robert was a surgeon; he served as the ships’ surgeon on the Siege of Port Royal on 17 September 1710.[3]  Robert prepared a will dated 23 February 1719, he died 7 April 1720.[4]

“… Robert Ellis, in his will (No. 4312) dated Feb. 23, 1719, probated April 18, 1720, devises one third of his estate real and personal, to his wife Elizabeth during her life, to be disposed of at her death as she [Elizabeth] shall see fit, and the other two thirds to his six children, Edward, Thomas, Robert, Samuel, Sarah and Elizabeth. He makes his wife Elizabeth and his brother in law James Pemberton, executors of his will, giving them power to sell before any division of his estate is made, provided such division be no longer delayed than such time as his youngest child shall arrive at the age of 15 years. In his inventory, filed July 4, 1720, “2 houses at the south end of the town & the Land thereunto belonging fronting Newberry & Winter street,” were appraised at £800. Elizabeth Ellis, widow, conveys to Elizabeth and Abigail Phillips, spinsters, by deed of mortgage dated Oct. 15, 1720, recorded Lib. 35, fol. 28, these two houses and the land belonging to them, to secure payment of £300, the estate being described as 76f. on Newbury Street, 70f. in the rear and 220f. on Winter Street, and 220f. on the south, Thomas Bannister being the abutter on the south and west. This mortgage was discharged on the margin of the record Oct. 12, 1722, by Abigail Phillips and by James Townsend who had married Elizabeth Phillips. In August of the latter year the widow again mortgaged this estate (L. 36, f. 127) to Abigail Phillips to secure the payment of £400. By reason of the non-payment of said principal sum and the interest thereon, the mortgage, then the wife of John Erwin, mariner, recovered judgment for possession of said estate at the Inferior Court of Common Pleas, and possession was delivered to said Erwin, Dec. 23, 1727. The tenants at the that time were John Durant, smith, Joseph Simpson, clogmaker, and Anne Stone, retailer. The smithy was at the corner of Newbury and Winter Streets, and the rent was £8 per annum. Erwin and wife, by deed dated June 15, 1728, recorded L. 42, f 179, conveyed the estate, which they describe as 240f. deep, to Benjamin Pemberton, merchant. By letter of attorney, dated April 13, 1727 (Lib. 40, fol. 323), Edward Ellis and Thomas Ellis surgeons, Thomas Kilby, merchant, and Sarah his wife, empower ‘Our honoured mother Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis of Boston aforesd Widow and Shopkeeper,’ to sell and convey three fifths parts of the houses and lands on Newbury and Winter Streets, late the estate of their father Robert Ellis, surgeon, deceased, and they ratify and confirm mortgage made by her. In answer to her petition presented to the General Court, Jan. 24. 1727, she was authorized to make sale of the mortgaged premises. She then by deed, dated April 26, 1728 (L. 42, f. 98), conveyed the estate, described as 240 f. deep, to said Benjamin Pemberton. Benjamin Pemberton having thus acquired title to the Ellis estate, divided it into smaller parcels…”
