Some of my ancestors who died too young

Many of us believe that the death of child is becoming rarer than in the past, but ten million children die before their fifth birthday each year.  With numbers like that, death will touch each family in one way or another.  Leading causes are birth asphyxia, pneumonia, pre-term birth complications, diarrhea, malaria, measles and malnutrition.[1]  In modern history death was even more prevalent then it is today.  Children and youth were subject to many more diseases and physical hardships.  Plagues were a big part of childhood deaths, and many things that current medicines can cure easily, were deadly in those days.  Diet or lack thereof was another factor in childhood deaths.  30% of England’s children died before the age of 15 between the 16th and 18th centuries.  Death was higher in urban than rural areas.  Accidents were another common source of death, drowning was one of the number one causes of death in children.  Children were also killed when working in dangerous situations.  It was also rare to hire a doctor to care for family members, especially children in the average family, due to cost, if a doctor’s help was sought for, it was only to give a diagnosis, not the care of the child.[2]

With this information in mind here are ten children from my family tree:

Hannah CALEF was baptized 22 February 1735 at the New South Church, Boston, Suffolk, MA.[3] Hannah is the daughter of Joseph C. and Hannah (JORDAN) CALEF.  She died before 12 December 1742 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.  Hannah is my first cousin seven times removed through her grandparents, my seventh great grandparents Dominicus and Hannah (TRISTRAM) JORDAN. [her date of birth is unknown, only the date of baptism, and date of death is also unknown, only that she had a sister that was named Hannah baptized 12 December 1742.]

Antoine BOUTEILLIER was born February 1788 in Chambly, La Vallée-du-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.  He was christened 15 February at St. Antoine de Lonqueuil, in Lonqueuil, Quebec, Canada.[4] He was the son of Joseph and Marie Veronique (ARCHAMBAULT) BOUTHEILLER.   He died 18 December 1802 in Lonqueuil, Quebec, Canada.[5]  He is interred at St. Antoine de Lonqueuil, in Lonqueuil, Quebec, Canada.  He was my fourth great granduncle, related through his parents.

Elizabeth A. JELLISON was born February 1843 according to her headstone or 20 February 1837 in Waltham, Hancock, ME according to The Family Jordan book.[6]  She was the daughter of Joseph H. and Abigail (JORDAN) JELLISON.  She died 20 July 1853 in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[7]  She is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[8]  She is my third great grandaunt through her parents, and my fifth cousin eight times removed through her fourth great grandparents John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents.

Eva M. JELLISON was born 13 January 1853 in ME.[9]  She is the daughter of Moses Adams and Clarinda R. (GILES) JELLISON.  She died 13 February 1862 in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[10]  Her death notice appeared in the Ellsworth American 28 February 1862.  She is my first cousin four times removed through her grandparents Joseph H. and Abigail (JORDAN) JELLISON and my sixth cousin seven times removed through her fifth great grandparents John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents.  Copied from The Ellsworth American February 28, 1862 edition Friday DIED Waltham-13th inst., Eva M, daughter of Moses A. Jellison, aged 9 years. “The flowers that bloomed the brightest, Are soonest doomed to fade; The forms that move the lightest, In earth are soonest laid.”

Louis LAGÜE was born 11 October 1727 in Chambly, La Vallée-du-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.  He was the son of Michel and Catherine (LECLERC) LAGÜE SANCARTIER.  He died 20 February 1728 in Chambly, La Vallée-du-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.  He is my sixth great granduncle related through his parents.

Georgianna T. SNELL was born 1 March 1851 in Ellsworth, Hancock, ME.[11]  She is the daughter of Albion King and Martha Jane (JELLISON) SNELL.  She died of diphtheria on 18 March 1862 in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[12]  She is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[13]  She is my first cousin four times removed through her grandparents Joseph H. and Abigail (JORDAN) JELLISON and my sixth cousin seven times removed through her fifth great grandparents, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK.

Abbey E SNELL was born 24 October 1852 in Portland, Cumberland, ME.[14]  She was the daughter of Albion King and Martha Jane (JELLISON) SNELL.  She died of diphtheria on 6 August 1862 in Waltham, Hancock, ME, just 19 days after her sister Georgianna (above).[15]  She is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[16]  She is my first cousin four times removed through her grandparents Joseph H. and Abigail (JORDAN) JELLISON and my sixth cousin seven times removed through her fifth great grandparents, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK.

Susan STEVENSON was born 16 February 1855 in Hemmingford, Les Jardins-de-Napierville, Quebec, Canada.  She is the daughter of William and Elizabeth (FLUKER) STEVENSON.  She died about 1860 in Hemmingford, Les Jardins-de-Napierville, Quebec, Canada.  She is my first cousin four times removed through her grandfather my fourth great grandfather Robert STEVENSON and Jane SNOWDEN (not related to me).

Nancy WESCOTT was born 15 March 1771 in Penobscot, Hancock, ME.[17]  She was the daughter of Captain William Post and Elizabeth (PERKINS) WESCOTT.  She died 24 February 1775 in Penobscot, Hancock, ME.[18]  She is my fifth great grand aunt through her parents my sixth great grandparents and sixth cousin removed through her fifth great grandparents John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents.

Abby E. Snell

Abby E. SNELL is my first cousin four times removed; we are related through her grandparents, my fourth great grandparents Joseph H. and Abigail (JORDAN) JELLISON.  Abby is the third of five children born to Albion King and Martha Jane (JELLISON) SNELL.  There is a good chance that we are related through the SNELL line, but as of now I’ve not found the link.  Abby was born 24 October 1852 in Portland, Maine.[1]  She was enumerated with her parents in 1860 taken in Waltham, Maine.[2]  She died at age nine of diphtheria 6 April 1862 in Waltham.[3]  She is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Waltham.

Benjamin Hill

Benjamin HILL is my sixth great grand uncle; he is the son of my sixth great grandparents Ebenezer and Abiel (SNELL) HILL.  He is the fifth of nine children, born 25 September 1715 in Biddeford, Maine.[1]  Benjamin married first, Ann HAYES, intention filed 24 March 1738 in Biddeford, Maine.[2]  Benjamin and Ann had eight children:  Ebenezer, Sarah, Joanna, Mehitable, Benjamin, Eunice, Joseph and Reuben.  Benjamin married second, Elizabeth GILPATRICK, 9 October 1760 in Biddeford.[3]  They had nine children:  Abiel, Joshua, John, Benjamin, Joseph, Samuel, Molly (Mary), Elisha and Betty.  He died 8 November 1791 in Biddeford.  It is believed that he died 8 November 1791 in Biddeford.

Notes:

Benjamin was the first child born once the family returned from Canada after being abducted by Indians 10 August 1703.  There is a six year gap between him and his older sister, I’m unsure if there were other children that didn’t survive and are not mentioned or if there just were no children during that time.
