Jotham NUTTER

Jotham NUTTER is my third cousin, seven times removed through Andrew “King” and Deborah (WILSON) HALEY.  He resided in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire and Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.[1]  He was taxed in 1790 for £0:10:6 and in 1815 for £ 2.[2]  There are no records of him serving in the Revolutionary War, though he would have been prime age for service.

Jotham NUTTER was born 22 May 1748 in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire.[3]  He was the son of Anthony and Mary (DOWNING) NUTTER.  He died January 1832 in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.[4]  He is believed to be interred at Old Cemetery in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.  Jotham married Elizabeth Harrison DOWNING 9 February 1769 in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire.[5]  Elizabeth was born 1 May 1749 or 1759 in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire.[6]  She was the daughter of John and Patience (HAM) DOWNING.  She died 22 November 1819 in New Hampshire.  She is interred at Old Cemetery in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.[7]

Jotham and Elizabeth had the following children:

  1. John NUTTER born 20 October 1782 in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.[8] He died about 1863 in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.  John married Sally HURD 13 November 1810 in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.  Sally was born 18 December 1788 in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.  She was the daughter of Nathaniel P. HURD.  She died 21 April 1878 in Rochester, Strafford, New Hampshire.  They had seven children.
  2. Richard N. NUTTER born 28 May 1785 in Wakefield, Carroll, New Hampshire.[9] He died 25 November 1881 in Ripley, Somerset, Maine.[10]  He is interred at Nutter Cemetery in Ripley, Somerset, Maine.[11]  Richard married Betsey WESTON 17 December 1812 in Norridgewock, Somerset, Maine.[12]  Betsey was born 29 April 1791 in Norridgewock, Somerset, Maine.[13]  She was the daughter of William and Betsey (CLARK) WESTON.  She died 5 September 1857.[14]  She is interred at Nutter Cemetery in Ripley, Somerset, Maine.[15]  They had five children.

Rizpah BRYANT

Rizpah was also known as Rispah, Arispey, Ariffy or Arisba.  This name fascinates me, it is a rare Hebrew name and almost all that have this name are related in some way.  She is my second cousin seven times removed; we are related through Capt. Joseph and Joanna (Thomas) Vaughan.  He filed for a Widow’s Pension in 1843 for her husband Eleazer’s service in the Revolutionary War in 1775, 1778 and 1778.[1]

Rizpah BRYANT was born 6 December 1762 in Halifax, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[2]  She was the daughter of Joseph and Zilpha (SAMPSON) BRYANT.  She was christened in 1767 in Plympton, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[3]  She died 27 June 1846 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.  She is interred at Thomastown Cemetery in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[4]  Rizpah married Eleazer THOMAS 26 April 1781 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts by Noah Fearing, justice of the peace.[5]  Eleazer was born 4 March 1755 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[6]  He was the son of Eleazer and Mary (SHAW) THOMAS.  He died 31 July 1826.[7]  He is interred at Thomastown Cemetery in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[8]

Rizpah and Eleazer had the following children:

  1. Lucinda THOMAS was born 17 September 1782 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[9] She died of consumption on 14 January 1849 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[10]  She is interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[11]  Lucinda married Elias THOMAS 1 January 1804 in Middleborough, Middleborough, Massachusetts with intentions filed 19 November 1803.[12]  Elias was born 4 April 1873 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.  He was the son of Levi and Hannah (WESTON) THOMAS.  He died 17 October 1856 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.  He was interred at Oak Grove Cemetery.[13]
  2. Asa THOMAS was born 14 April 1785 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[14] Asa died of old age on 6 March 1867 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[15]  He was interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[16]  Asa married Lucy THOMAS 14 June 1818 In Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts; with intention published 19 April 1818.[17]  Lucy was born 8 May 1788 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.  She was the daughter of Ezra and Lucy (STURTEVANT) THOMAS.  She died 1 September 1880 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
  3. Susanna THOMAS was born 5 August 1787 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[18] She died 21 May 1827 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[19]  Susannah married Jacob DUNHAM sometime in 1809 between April and November in Plymouth County, Massachusetts.  There are many conflicting dates found for the couple.[20]  Jacob was born 17 September 1782.  He was the son of Elijah and Eunice (THOMAS) DUNHAM.  He died 24 May 1860 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[21]
  4. Eleazer THOMAS was born 10 October 1790 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[22] He died 1 May 1869 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[23]  He is interred at Thomastown Cemetery in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[24]  Eleazer married Eunice SHURTLEFF between 14 May 1815 and 25 February 1816 in Carver, Plymouth, Massachusetts or Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[25]  Eunice was born 27 January 1797 in Carver, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[26]  She was the daughter of Gideon and Lucy (SHAW) SHURTLEFF.  Eunice died 10 May 1874 in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[27]  She was interred at Thomastown Cemetery in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[28]
  5. Asa JORDAN

Asa is my fifth cousin four times removed; we are related through Reverend Robert and Sarah (WINTER) JORDAN, his fourth great grandparents, my eighth great grandparents.  Asa and Harriet are enumerated with her parents along with son Albert in the 1850 census taken in Litchfield, Kennebec, ME.[1]  The 1860 census finds the family in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[2]  The 1870 census finds the family back in Litchfield, Kennebec, ME, for which I find that they are actually at the Gardiner post office of Litchfield, Kennebec, ME.[3]  In the 1880 census the family is enumerated in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[4]

Asa JORDAN was born 1821 in Richmond, Sagadahoc, ME.[5]  He was the son of David and Mary (LANDER) JORDAN.  He died 7 March 1905 in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[6]  He was interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[7]  Asa married Harriet WESTON 11 April 1846.[8]  Harriet was born in 1817.[9]  She was the daughter of Stephen and Abigail (LAMBERT) WESTON; the book The Family Jordan incorrectly shows her the daughter of Hiram and Della L. WESTON.  She died 12 January 1883 in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[10]  Her body is interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[11]

Asa and Harriet had the following children:

  1. Albert was born 7 September 1846 in Litchfield, Kennebec, ME.[12]
  2. George E. was born 1856 in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[13] He died 1927.[14]  He was interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[15]  George married Della F. POWERS 20 November 1884.[16]  Della was born 21 March 1865 in Bowdoin, Sagadahoc, ME.[17]  She died 1 August 1894 in Litchfield, Kennebec, ME.[18]  Della was interred in Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[19]
