Asa LADD

Asa LADD is my second cousin eight times removed; related through John and Ruth (SWAN) HARTSHORN.  He is said to have died in Suffolk County, Massachusetts on 17 June 1775 which happens to be the date of the Battle of Bunker Hill.  I can find no records of him being involved in the battle, but, due to his location and the date of his death, and the fact that he died in a county he didn’t live in, it’s a safe bet that he died in battle or wounds sustained while in battle.

Asa LADD was born 16 March 1736 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts, there are some conflicting recordings in some books with date 10 March 1735.[1]  He was the son of Daniel and Mehitable (ROBERTS) LADD.  He died 17 June 1775 in Suffolk, Massachusetts.  Asa married twice; first he married Sarah MERRILL 28 December 1757 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[2]  Sarah was born 27 February 1735 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[3]  She was the daughter of Samuel and Ruth (EATON) MERRILL.  She died between 1762 and 1765 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[4]  Asa married second to Hannah CLOUGH in Massachusetts about 1765 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[5]  Hannah was born 18 February 1742 in Salem, Rockingham, New Hampshire.[6]  She was the daughter of Jethro and Mary (DUSTIN) CLOUGH. Hannah married second to Moses MERRILL 28 November 1782 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[7]

Asa and Sarah had the following children:

  1. Sarah LADD born 24 September 1758 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[8] She married Phineas CLOUGH 29 December 1778. Phineas was born 16 April 1749 in Salem, Rockingham, New Hampshire.[9]   He was the son of Josiah and Abigail (HASTINGS) CLOUGH.  She and Phineas disappear from all Massachusetts state records after their marriage.  They had 1 daughter.
  2. Asa LADD born 9 January 1762 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[10] He died 1 June 1851.  Asa married twice; first he married Martha CHASE 14 September 1784in Haverhill, Grafton, New Hampshire by Moses Dow, Justice of the Peace.[11]  Martha was born about 1766 in Enosburg, Franklin, Vermont.  She died 11 June 1820 in Enosburg Falls, Franklin, Vermont.  They had 10 children. Asa married second to Elizabeth DEMMING in 1830.  Elizabeth was born in 1766 in Enosburg Falls, Franklin, Vermont.  She died in 1844.  They had no children.

Asa and Hannah had the following children:

  1. Richard LADD born 14 April 1766 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[12] He married Betty WOODMAN 9 December 1790 in Hopkinton, Merrimack, New Hampshire by Reverend Mr. CRAM.[13]  They divorced before 1803.[14]  They had 1 son.  Betty was born 11 May 1764 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.[15]  She was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (BANCROFT) WOODMAN.  Betty died 1854 in Hopkinton, Merrimack, New Hampshire.  Betty married second to Benjamin FELLOWS 28 June 1803 in New Hampshire.[16]
  2. Dustan LADD born 1 July 1768 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[17] Twin of Dudley LADD.
  3. Dudley LADD 1 July 1768 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[18] He died before 1771.  Twin to Dustan LADD.
  4. Dudley LADD born 30 January 1771 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[19]
  5. Merrill LADD born 12 January 1773 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[20]
  6. Dilley Sarah LADD born 19 November 1775 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts.[21] She died 7 June 1842 in Rockport, Essex, Massachusetts.  Dilley married Clement CASTELL/CASTLE at St. John the Baptist in Margate, Kent, England.[22]  Clement was born 1768 in England.  He was the son of George and Ann (COCK) CASTLE.

Note:

There is little known about the children of Asa and Hannah, no records other than birth were found in the state.  It could be they took their step-father’s name once the parents married.  As to Dilly Sarah, I believe I have the correct person for the records.  If you find otherwise please let me know.

Burt Orlando DURAND

Burt is my fifth cousin five times removed.  We are related through Benjamin and Ruth (WOODMAN) LOWELL.  Burt worked at the insurance and real estate office his father founded just before he was born.[1]  He was a township clerk, and chief of the local fire station in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[2]  He was a member of the First Congregational Church.[3]  He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and was a Mason.[4]  His political affiliation was Republican.[5]  He attended Oberlin College for seven years from age 15 to 22.[6]  He was enumerated in the following censuses: 1870 and 1880 with his parents in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[7]  He was enumerated in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 with his wife and children in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[8]  He was enumerated with his wife in the 1930 and 1940 censuses in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[9]

Burt Orlando DURAND was born 20 October 1866 or 30 October 1866 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[10]  He was the son of William Buel and Hannah (BRECKENRIDGE) DURAND.  He died 19 August 1943 from cerebral thrombosis and senile dementia in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[11]  He is interred at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[12]  Burt married Lillian BURGESS 9 October 1889 in Huron County, Ohio.[13]  Lillian was born 8 October 1865 in Hunter, Greene, New York.[14]  She was the daughter of Charles Winfield and Jane Elizabeth (DOUGLASS) BURGESS.  She died of heart failure on 16 November 1950 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[15]  She is interred at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[16]

Burt and Lillian had the following children:

  1. Corinne Elizabeth DURAND was born 28 December 1895 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[17]  She died 3 February 1995 in Lorain County, Ohio.[18]  She is interred at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[19]  She attended college for two years and was a registered nurse.[20]  Corinne married George Stowell DUDLEY 14 June 1922 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[21]  George was born 30 June 1887 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[22]  He was the son of John B. and Mary W. DUDLEY.  George died in 1966.  He is interred at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[23]  They had two children.
  2. William Breckenridge DURAND was born 7 May 1898 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[24] He died 1 August 1975 in Berea, Cuyahoga, Ohio.[25]  He is interred at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[26]  William married Eletha Finch BECKWITH in November 1922 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.  Eletha was born 27 June 1896 in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.  She was the daughter of Franklin Fletcher and Minivieve Catherine (FINCH) BECKWITH.  She died 19 June 1988 in Berea, Cuyahoga, Ohio.  She is interred at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio.[27]
