Some of my ancestors who died too young

Many of us believe that the death of child is becoming rarer than in the past, but ten million children die before their fifth birthday each year.  With numbers like that, death will touch each family in one way or another.  Leading causes are birth asphyxia, pneumonia, pre-term birth complications, diarrhea, malaria, measles and malnutrition.[1]  In modern history death was even more prevalent then it is today.  Children and youth were subject to many more diseases and physical hardships.  Plagues were a big part of childhood deaths, and many things that current medicines can cure easily, were deadly in those days.  Diet or lack thereof was another factor in childhood deaths.  30% of England’s children died before the age of 15 between the 16th and 18th centuries.  Death was higher in urban than rural areas.  Accidents were another common source of death, drowning was one of the number one causes of death in children.  Children were also killed when working in dangerous situations.  It was also rare to hire a doctor to care for family members, especially children in the average family, due to cost, if a doctor’s help was sought for, it was only to give a diagnosis, not the care of the child.[2]

With this information in mind here are ten children from my family tree:

Hannah CALEF was baptized 22 February 1735 at the New South Church, Boston, Suffolk, MA.[3] Hannah is the daughter of Joseph C. and Hannah (JORDAN) CALEF.  She died before 12 December 1742 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.  Hannah is my first cousin seven times removed through her grandparents, my seventh great grandparents Dominicus and Hannah (TRISTRAM) JORDAN. [her date of birth is unknown, only the date of baptism, and date of death is also unknown, only that she had a sister that was named Hannah baptized 12 December 1742.]

Antoine BOUTEILLIER was born February 1788 in Chambly, La Vallée-du-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.  He was christened 15 February at St. Antoine de Lonqueuil, in Lonqueuil, Quebec, Canada.[4] He was the son of Joseph and Marie Veronique (ARCHAMBAULT) BOUTHEILLER.   He died 18 December 1802 in Lonqueuil, Quebec, Canada.[5]  He is interred at St. Antoine de Lonqueuil, in Lonqueuil, Quebec, Canada.  He was my fourth great granduncle, related through his parents.

Elizabeth A. JELLISON was born February 1843 according to her headstone or 20 February 1837 in Waltham, Hancock, ME according to The Family Jordan book.[6]  She was the daughter of Joseph H. and Abigail (JORDAN) JELLISON.  She died 20 July 1853 in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[7]  She is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[8]  She is my third great grandaunt through her parents, and my fifth cousin eight times removed through her fourth great grandparents John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents.

Jellison, aged 9 years. “The flowers that bloomed the brightest, Are soonest doomed to fade; The forms that move the lightest, In earth are soonest laid.”

Georgianna T. SNELL was born 1 March 1851 in Ellsworth, Hancock, ME.[11]  She is the daughter of Albion King and Martha Jane (JELLISON) SNELL.  She died of diphtheria on 18 March 1862 in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[12]  She is interred at Hillside Cemetery in Waltham, Hancock, ME.[13]  She is my first cousin four times removed through her grandparents Joseph H. and Abigail (JORDAN) JELLISON and my sixth cousin seven times removed through her fifth great grandparents, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK.

Alexander Stevenson

Alexander STEVENSON is my third great grandfather.  Alexander was born to Robert and Nancy (MC LEAN) STEVENSON, 16 August 1827 in Huntingdon, Québec, and the fourth of their seven children.  Alexander was baptized at an Episcopal Church, Caldwell and Christie on 28 September 1827 in Iberville, Québec.[1]  Alexander married Mary 8 September 1851 at the Methodist and Presbyterian Church in Russelltown, Québec by W. Montgomery, minister.  They had seven children:  Robert Henry, William H., Thomas, Alexander (Alex), Allicia Ann, John Haire, and Agnes, all the children were born in Huntingdon, Québec.  Alexander was enumerated in a census taken in 1861 in Huntington; he was listed as a yeoman (farmer).[2]  He died 4 April 1865 and is buried at the Methodist Church in Huntingdon.[3]
