Asa JORDAN

Asa is my fifth cousin four times removed; we are related through Reverend Robert and Sarah (WINTER) JORDAN, his fourth great grandparents, my eighth great grandparents.  Asa and Harriet are enumerated with her parents along with son Albert in the 1850 census taken in Litchfield, Kennebec, ME.[1]  The 1860 census finds the family in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[2]  The 1870 census finds the family back in Litchfield, Kennebec, ME, for which I find that they are actually at the Gardiner post office of Litchfield, Kennebec, ME.[3]  In the 1880 census the family is enumerated in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[4]

Asa JORDAN was born 1821 in Richmond, Sagadahoc, ME.[5]  He was the son of David and Mary (LANDER) JORDAN.  He died 7 March 1905 in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[6]  He was interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[7]  Asa married Harriet WESTON 11 April 1846.[8]  Harriet was born in 1817.[9]  She was the daughter of Stephen and Abigail (LAMBERT) WESTON; the book The Family Jordan incorrectly shows her the daughter of Hiram and Della L. WESTON.  She died 12 January 1883 in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[10]  Her body is interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME.[11]

Asa and Harriet had the following children:

Marilla M. JORDAN

Marilla is my third cousin four times removed and fourth cousin three times removed; we are related through her second and third great grandparents, Nathaniel and Dorothy (HILL) JORDAN, my sixth great grandparents.  She is also my fourth cousin five times removed through Roger and Mary “Sarah” (CROSS) HILL, her third and fourth great grandparents, my eighth great grandparents.  And lastly she is my sixth cousin seven times removed through her fifth great grandparents, John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents.  When dealing with my Maine relations, the relationships get rather complicated and confused as you can see above.  I didn’t also include that many of my great grandparents also distant cousins too.  Partly due to the isolation of the area there wasn’t a lot of new people in and out of the areas, so families tended to marry those they lived near or new well.  Many times a brother would marry the sister of his sister’s husband, or other such combinations, thereby making the relations ever more complicated.  Add into the age differences from oldest to youngest sibling the generations get set off a bit therefore making a great grandparent a ninth AND a twelfth.  Marilla and James outlived all three of their children, which at this time I cannot find any trace of them by name or birth.  The only record I have of their existence is only on the 1880 and 1900 census.[1]  Marilla and James were enumerated in the 1880 census taken in Janesville, Greenwood, KS.[2]  They were enumerated in the 1900 census taken in Leon City, Little Walnut Township, Butler, KS.[3]  And their final census was in 1910 in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA.[4]

Marilla M. JORDAN was born 11 April 1841 in Webster Androscoggin, ME.[5]  She was the daughter of Benning Wentworth and Lydia Ann (CHASE) JORDAN.  Marilla died in 1918.  She is interred at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA.[6]  She married James Alfred THING 17 March 1863 in Kennebec, ME.[7]  James was born 9 March 1828 in Hallowell, Kennebec, ME.[8]  He was the son of Levi and Mary (MARTIN) THING.  He died in 1922.  James is interred at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA.[9]

Childhood deaths month of April

“There is no footprint too small to leave an imprint on this world.” Author unknown.  The death of a child is one of the hardest things a parent has to endure, but the death of more than one child must be a living hell.  Many of the families I’ve researched have had that happen, some losing all their children before they attain adulthood.  Below are the few children I’ve come across this week of the young lives that would be forgotten, but with genealogy, and the search of the families that came before me I have come across these little heroes.

Tristram JORDAN was born 11 April 1726 in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME.[1]  He was the son of Major Dominicus and Johanna (DEERING) JORDAN.  He died at the age of 11 months and 7 days on 18 March 1727 in Falmouth, Cumberland, ME. “Maine, Death Records, 1617-1922,” copy of old death records, Ancestry.com, Ancestry.com (http://ancestry.com : online 18 March 2014), Trustem [Tristram] Jordan 18 Mar 1727.

Esther JORDAN was born about 1778 in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME.  She was the daughter of Clement and Sarah (GRAY) JORDAN.  She “died young,” which generally means before the age of consent.

Martha JORDAN was born about 1776 in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME.  She was the daughter of Clement and Sarah (GRAY) JORDAN.  She “died young,” which generally means before the age of consent.

Edward Trufry STANLEY was born 16 November 1830 in Mount Desert, Hancock, ME.[2]  He was the son of Isaac and Eliza A. (JORDAN) STANLEY.  He died about age 7 in 1837.[3]

Freeman COFFIN was born 13 May 1806.  He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (PARKER) COFFIN.  He died at the age of 1 year, 10 months and 29 days, on 11 April 1808.

Louisa JORDAN was born 21 May 1819 in Gorham, Cumberland, ME.[4]  She was the daughter of Benjamin Allen and Elizabeth (ADAMS) JORDAN.  She died at the age of 1 year, 10 months and 30 days, on 20 April 1821.[5]

Louisa JORDAN was born 11 May 1824 in Gorham, Cumberland, ME.[6]  She was the daughter of Benjamin Allen and Elizabeth (ADAMS) JORDAN.  She died at the age of 1 year, 8 days on 19 May 1825 in Gorham, Cumberland, ME.[7]

Rebecca JORDAN was born 10 July 1821 in Gorham, Cumberland, ME.[8] She was the daughter of Benjamin Allen and Elizabeth (ADAMS) JORDAN. She died at the age of 7 years, 9 months on 10 April 1829 in Gorham, Cumberland, ME.[9]
