Elizabeth MITCHELL

Elizabeth is my third cousin five times removed; we are related through Dominicus and Hannah (TRISTRAM) JORDAN.  I found it interesting that no family tree found on Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org or even in The Jordan Family listed all of the children; each only listed two to three children for the family.  It took some interesting search methods to finally piece the family together.  Although not all children have full information, there is enough on each family member to get a good sense of who the family was.

Elizabeth “Betsey” MITCHELL was born 8 November 1775 in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Maine.[1]  She is the daughter of Jonathan and Anna (LOVETT) MITCHELL.  She died 17 June 1856 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[2]  She is interred at McKenney-Murray Cemetery in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine.[3]  Elizabeth married twice; first she married Luke LIBBY 21 September 1795 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine, mistakenly listed as 20 August 1796 in The Family Jordan.[4]  Luke was born 1767 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine.[5]  He was the son of Luke and Dorothy (MCKENNEY) LIBBY.    He died 13 October 1800 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[6]  He is interred at McKenney-Murray Cemetery in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine.[7]  Elizabeth married second to Thomas MURRAY 20 December 1801 in New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine; with intentions filed 27 November 1801 in New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine; the marriage date was mistakenly given as 17 June 1801 in The Family Jordan.[8]  Thomas was born 29 March 1778 in Gorham, Cumberland, Maine. [9]  He was the son of Anthony and Abiel (HOLBROOK) MURRAY.  He died 12 March 1843 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[10]  He is interred at McKenney-Murray Cemetery in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine.[11]

Elizabeth and Luke had the following children:

  1. Jonathan LIBBY born 28 February 1797 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[12] He died 11 November 1867 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[13]  He was interred at Pine Street Cemetery in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine.[14]  Jonathan married twice; first he married Mary JORDAN 4 December 1823 in Pejepscot, Androscoggin, Maine.[15]  Mary was born 9 February 1797.[16]  She was the daughter of William and Eunice (JORDAN) JORDAN.  She died 9 September 1850 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[17]  She was interred at Pine Street Cemetery in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine.[18]  Jonathan married second to Dorothy LIBBY after 1851.[19]  She was born 30 June 1801.[20]  She died 9 September 1876.[21]  Jonathan had four children with Mary.
  2. Luke LIBBY born 15 December 1798 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine. He died December 1798.[22]
  3. Dorothy “Dolly” LIBBY born 8 February 1800 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[23] She married William JORDAN 5 February 1818 in Pejepscot, Androscoggin, Maine.[24]  William was born 1 April 1794 in Pejepscot, Androscoggin, Maine.[25]  He was the son of Ebenezer and Sarah (MCKENNEY) JORDAN.  He died 24 April 1835 in Danville, Androscoggin, Maine.[26]  He was interred at Fitz Cemetery in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine.[27]  William is my second cousin five times removed and fifth cousin seven times removed.  William and Dorothy are third cousins once removed.  Dorothy and William had eight children.

Marilla M. JORDAN

Marilla is my third cousin four times removed and fourth cousin three times removed; we are related through her second and third great grandparents, Nathaniel and Dorothy (HILL) JORDAN, my sixth great grandparents.  She is also my fourth cousin five times removed through Roger and Mary “Sarah” (CROSS) HILL, her third and fourth great grandparents, my eighth great grandparents.  And lastly she is my sixth cousin seven times removed through her fifth great grandparents, John and Elizabeth (BIRCHARD) ALCOCK, my ninth and twelfth great grandparents.  When dealing with my Maine relations, the relationships get rather complicated and confused as you can see above.  I didn’t also include that many of my great grandparents also distant cousins too.  Partly due to the isolation of the area there wasn’t a lot of new people in and out of the areas, so families tended to marry those they lived near or new well.  Many times a brother would marry the sister of his sister’s husband, or other such combinations, thereby making the relations ever more complicated.  Add into the age differences from oldest to youngest sibling the generations get set off a bit therefore making a great grandparent a ninth AND a twelfth.  Marilla and James outlived all three of their children, which at this time I cannot find any trace of them by name or birth.  The only record I have of their existence is only on the 1880 and 1900 census.[1]  Marilla and James were enumerated in the 1880 census taken in Janesville, Greenwood, KS.[2]  They were enumerated in the 1900 census taken in Leon City, Little Walnut Township, Butler, KS.[3]  And their final census was in 1910 in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA.[4]

Marilla M. JORDAN was born 11 April 1841 in Webster Androscoggin, ME.[5]  She was the daughter of Benning Wentworth and Lydia Ann (CHASE) JORDAN.  Marilla died in 1918.  She is interred at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA.[6]  She married James Alfred THING 17 March 1863 in Kennebec, ME.[7]  James was born 9 March 1828 in Hallowell, Kennebec, ME.[8]  He was the son of Levi and Mary (MARTIN) THING.  He died in 1922.  James is interred at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Los Angeles, CA.[9]

Lewis is my first cousin four times removed; we are related through his grandparents, my fourth great grandparents, Olive Eugene and Adelia (LEDGER) LAJEEUNESSE.  He was enumerated in the 1870 in North Hero, Grand Isle, VT with his parents.[1]  Lewis was enumerated in 1880 in North Hero, Grand Isle, VT as a servant for the farm next door to his parents.[2]  From 1900 to 1930 he was enumerated in South Hero, Grand Isle, VT with his wife Lena and one or more of his children and in later years their spouses and grandchildren in South Hero, Grand Isle, VT.[3]  He was enumerated with his new wife Mary in the 1940 censuses in South Hero, Grand Isle, VT next door to her son Wilfred P.
